Ortho Evra Birth Control Patch Glossary

The following terms are used or associated with Ortho Evra:

Ortho Evra - is a brand of birth control patch manufactured by Ortho McNeil, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson.

Estrogen - the primary female sex hormone. Estrogen is released by Ortho Evra in sometimes dangerous levels that can cause health complications.

Progestin - a synthetic hormone that is common in many contraceptives. Progestin is released in potentially hazardous amounts by Ortho Evra.

Blood Clot- the final step during coagulation, the process during which blood forms solid masses. Blood clots can lead to a wide range of health problems, including DVT, PE, and stroke. Ortho Evra has caused blood clots in women who have taken the drug.

Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) - a condition caused by the formation of a blood clot in a deep vein. Individuals suffering from DVT may develop complications that can cause serious health problems and even death.

Pulmonary Embolism (PE) - a condition that occurs when a blood clot attaches itself to one of the lungs. A pulmonary embolism may cause difficulty or pain while breathing and in severe cases even death.

Stroke - a dangerous condition that occurs when the blood supply to a part of the brain is interrupted. There are different types of strokes, and they can cause a wide range of health problems.

Black Box Warning - a statement required by the FDA that is found on the packaging of prescription drugs, warning users of serious side effects that the medication may cause.
